Soofia International School- ‘A successful competition for me is always going out there and putting 100 percent into whatever I’m doing. It’s not always winning. People, I think it is a mistake that it’s just about winning. Sometimes it could be though but for me, it’s hitting the best sets. I can say, gaining confidence and having a good time and invest in my learning is the prime centre of my definition of competition with a purpose,’ says Kananelo Mdabudabu, one of the ardent verbatim debater who participated in the Soofia Language Fair [SLF 1] held at the school campus on 23 May 2019.
Echoing the same sentiments, Puleng Mohlomi, an all rounder in several categories which include [English debate, English Creative Writing, English Poetry, English Spelling Bee, French Drama, French Quiz, French Dictation, Sesotho Drama, Sesotho Quiz, Sesotho Drama and Sesotho Poetry] said, ‘The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to showcase. If you are a true warrior, competition doesn’t scare you but it makes you better.’
As interviewed, the HOD Languages, Mr Motseki Lenoela alluded that, ‘Competition has been shown among the participants and shows to be useful up to a certain point and no further but cooperation, which is the thing we must all strive to gain as teachers and learners, for today begins where competition leaves off.’
In his further remarks, the exuberant HOD, remarked thus, ‘To all the members in the Language department and the student body, you have competition everyday because you set such high standards for yourself that you have to go out every day and live to that.’
Overall, all participants walked away with a remarkable designed ‘ Soofia International School Certificate of Participation’ while winners 1-3 in each category received ‘ Soofia International School Certificate of Excellence.’ Other packages to them included gold, silver and bronze medals as well dictionaries to the participants of categories in English Language.
This debut fair marks the beginning of SLF 2 to come in 2020 which will gather schools from various districts to converge at Soofia International School and lock horns for prestigious certificates of excellence and other remunerations thereof in ten categories. The event will comfortably be marked as one of the main events of the activities in the school calendar.
